Labour is one of the larger political parties within the United Kingdom. Recently sorrow has been caused due to a Member of Parliament (MP) from the labour party being shot and stabbed multiple times.
The MP, Jo Cox, had suffered serious injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene by medics.
Jo’s husband spoke about her death and her life. “Jo believed in a better world and she fought for it every day of her life with an energy and a zest for life that would exhaust most people. She would have wanted two things above all else to happen now – one, that our precious children are bathed in love and two, that we all unite to fight against the hatred that killed her. Hate does not have a creed, race or religion, it is poisonous, Jo would have no regrets about her life; she lived every day of it to the full.”
A man who lived down the street heard the killer shout Britain first when he was attacking, and when arrested.
Jo clearly was a very caring person. Before she started working within the labour party, she worked as a Head of Policy and Humanitarian campaigning for Oxfam. Even during the attack she told her female colleagues to leave her, let him attack her, and to not get themselves killed or hurt.
The criminal has never answered why exactly he picked her over all of the labour MP’s. It could have been she was the easiest accessible to him, or that she was female and he thought it would be easier. Ultimately, we don’t know. All we do know is he killed a loving family member, with his only reasoning being “Britain first”. Although, he took their ideas to the extreme, far further than other members of the “Britain first” party do. In reality, the murderer, Mair, was racist and now considered a terrorist; his home consisted of many far right party books and Nazi memorabilia. He was reading articles online on that the “white race is in a very bloody struggle” and that they were facing and existential threat. There is evidence that he has been working on a plan to kill for almost seventeen years.
Straight after the murder and arrest, neighbours suggested Mair had a history of mental illness. Mair’s family said he had been treated for OCD and that he was so anxious about cleanliness that he had previously scrubbed himself with pan scourers. Police did find much evidence for this within his home, being obsessively ordered, tinned food carefully arranged in rows, all the labels pointing in exactly the same direction, books in specific orders and organised, just to name a few. After his arrest, he was examined by a psychiatrist who found no evidence at all that his mental health was so poor that he was not responsible for his actions. The fact that he was socially isolated, only linking with one group of individuals, and feeling that group was threatened caused him to convict the crime. However, essentially, he was evaluated as essentially a sane man.
The last thing Cox heard whilst she was being stabbed 15 times was “This is for Britain.”
