Angelina Jolie a role model?

I have never been a huge Angelina Jolie fan, but she has made headlines twice in the past couple of weeks for two very different, but equally powerful reasons. And with both appearances she has impressed me.

Jolie revealed last week she underwent surgery to prevent her from getting a life threatening disease known as ovarian cancer. Not only was she brave to undergo such surgery, it was inspiring for her to speak out about it. 1 in 75 women will develop ovarian cancer, while 1 in 102 women will die from it. Awareness is one of the first steps to early detection. You may know someone who has suffered from this diagnosis or have heard of famous women who have had it such as: Gilda Radner, Kathy Bates and Coretta Scott King.

A week after her announcement, Angelina made an appearance on stage at the Kids’ Choice Awards. She was quoted telling the audience “Don’t fit in, don’t sit still, don’t ever try to be less than what you are and when someone tells you that you are different, smile and hold your head up high and be proud.”

These are extremely powerful words and a lesson most children and even some adults need to learn. Be yourself, not what everybody else thinks you should be. If they do not like you for you, they are not worth it. Never change to please anybody else.

So, what do you think? Is she a a good role model for people to have?
