Celebs Do the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

From Jennifer Lopez and Iggy Azalea to Justin Timberlake and Demi Lovato, everyone is accepting the challenge to dump a bucket of ice over themselves to raise awareness for Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (or Lou Gehrig’s disease).

According to, ALS “…is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.” It’s important to know the facts about this disease as their official website also adds that “based on U.S. population studies, a little over 5,600 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with ALS each year. (That’s 15 new cases a day.) It is estimated that as many as 30,000 Americans have the disease at any given time.”

The awareness is quickly being spread through social media with celebrities tagging other famous faces, some even going as far as to nominate entire bands and tv show casts, like 5 Seconds of Summer and the cast of Teen Wolf. Other celebrities have put their spin on the chilly challenge, like Chris Pratt who drank blue ice vodka and Smirnoff ice in an attempt to forgo the water but was doused by friends regardless. Emblem3 took the challenge a step further and got doused naked.

While some people find the #IceBucketChallenge “stupid”, they would be wrong. Originally, the challenge was to either donate 100 dollars or dump ice over your head, but as social media has shown us, many have opted to do both. As brought out in a recent article by Forbes, the challenge does three specific things:

1. It raises money for ALS

2. It encourages people to donate to charity in general

3. The Ice Bucket challenge is raising enough money to matter

Not much is known as to the cause of this lethal disease but the effort put in by people like you and me, and even A-list celebrity’s means the potential for finding some answers. Drugs are now in clinical trials that appear to be promising and every donation to this worthy cause is one step closer to helping those afflicted.

Tom Hiddleston, Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift, and even Oprah Winfrey have accepted the challenge. Will you?

I originally thought it was silly (much like the fire challenge) but thats before I knew it was for a cause. It’s definitely served its purpose in bringing awareness to the disease!
