Flashy First Lady

It was not just an unexpected president who was elected for the US on Nov 8th. There is also an unexpected First Lady, who many have despised and few believed she should never enter the White House. But the Americans voted and against everything and everyone, Donald and Melania Trump won.

Now, alongside her husband, the former model of Slovene origin is preparing to make a difference in American history, for not being the typical and conservative First Lady.

At the age of 46, Melania encompasses an undeniable beauty and uncontested elegance, which contrasts with the controversies she has been involved in with recent months.

Born in Sevnica, a small city in present-day Slovenia, Melanija Knavs grew up in a modest apartment, the daughter of a car salesman, a member of the Communist Party, and a textile worker.

At the age of 16, she began her career as a model, a profession that took her to Milan and Paris and then to New York, where she moved to in 1996. This is one of the biggest controversies involving the Trump couple during the campaign, since one of the most striking themes of the speech of the candidate was the one about immigration.

If the First Lady’s physique is extremely flashy, her personality stands out for her discretion. In fact, it is not easy to overshadow the temper of Donald Trump and his wife, who better than anyone else, understands that.

Throughout the campaign that took the magnate to the Oval Room of the White House, the former model proved to be different from her husband. She never tried to steal the leading role. Always discreet, the Slovenian scored points for trying to get away from the controversy, and despite the aggressive tone the whole campaign involved, she always responded with a smile and without raising her voice. Even in what has been the most delicate moment for him, when confronted with the release of a controversial video in which Donald Trump refers to women in a reprovable way, Melania reacted with determination and stood firm alongside the millionaire.

“The words my husband used are unacceptable and offensive to me. It does not represent the man that I know. He has the heart and mind of a leader.”
She added she hoped people would accept his apology “as I have” and “focus on the important issues facing our nation and the world”.

Married to Trump since 2005, she is the mother of 10-year-old Barron, the fifth child of the world’s most powerful man. Being a first lady might not have been in Melania’s imagination, but she might have been ready for it.

“It would be very traditional. Like Betty Ford or Jackie Kennedy. I would support him,” she replied in 1999, when asked by The New York Times about whether Donald Trump would be elected president of the United States or not.
