Homemade Apple Chips


Now that we’re in the middle of apple picking season, I thought it would be nice to put up a simple recipe for making delicious apple chips. Whether you buy them from the store or bring them home by the bagful from orchards, there’s a million and one things to do with apples. Let’s make some crispy treats to keep on hand for a yummy fall snack.

Ingredients:

Apples
Cinnamon
*optional: sugar, allspice

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit
2. Cut your apple into extremely thin slices. Use a mandolin if you’re more comfortable with that rather than a knife.
3. Lay slices on parchment covered cookie sheets. Sprinkle generously with cinnamon.
*optional step: mix cinnamon, sugar, and allspice into a small bowl. Sprinkle this mixture over the apples to give them a sweeter, more seasonal flavor.
4. Bake times vary from 1 hour and twenty minutes to 2 hours or even longer to achieve a crispier apple chip. Check chips for desired crispiness during baking, turning over and re-seasoning halfway through.

Some chips may crisp up perfectly while others will retain a chewier texture like that of dried fruit, depending on the thickness of your slices.
