Since I saw the pilot preview for this show I started counting the months left for its debut, and I have to say that it did not disappoint. So far.
iZombie tv series is a loose adaptation of the comic by the same title created by writer Chris Roberson and Michael Allred. This television series was developed by Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero-Wright, telling the life of a medical resident called Liv Moore, played by actress Rose McIver, who has her whole life thrown upside down after being infected with a virus during a boat party, spread by the party goers who have been turned into zombies after taking a new drug called ‘Utopium’.
Now with her new diet needs, she feels the urge to change her career and become a coroner’s assistant for the King County Medical Examiner’s Office, for easy access to brains. By now you are probably saying, “Another zombie that eats brains. Nothing new about that!”, but here’s the catch: This brain eating comes with a twist. Every time she eats a person/victim’s brains she gets flashes of memories from them and also the ability to take on quirks of her subjects from when they were alive. She uses this new ability of hers to help detective Clive Babinaux, played by Malcolm Goodwin, solve crimes, after being led to believe by Liv and medical examiner Dr. Ravi Chakrabarti, played by Rahul Kohli, that she is a psychic.
Ravi becomes Liv’s ally after finding out her secret by doing whatever he can to protect her from being exposed and also offering to help find a cure for her transformation. Dr Chakrabarti used to work for the Centers for Disease Control, but his obsession with preparing for a biological weapons attack gets him fired which leads him to end up working as a medical examiner and Liv’s boss.
Another character I can’t wait to see more of is the drug dealer Blaine DeBeers, played by David Anders, who played in shows such as Heroes and Once Upon A Time, just to name a couple. He was the drug dealer selling the drug that caused the zombie outbreak on the boat party. Now a zombie himself he replaces the selling of drugs with brains. “How?” you might ask, but you’ll have to see it to find out. After all, you wouldn’t want me spoiling it for you.
This is not the typical zombies we've been used to. Very refreshing to watch. Funny too.
